Life. Is it a journey? My poster is the path – path to happiness. Broken ladder symbolises the pumpy road to the ultimate goal. The composition if formed by the word “ELU”.

Is Virtuality better than Reality? Two figures on the poster are looking for that answer? Are they communicating with each other face to face or are they Googleing?

2017

Haapsalu Graphic Design Festival (HGDF) focuses on the developments of poster art and the author’s creative hand-writing in graphic design. This years festival is inspired from Haapsalu Tchaikovsky Festival (june 28th – july the 1st). Important extra is an exhibition “Estonian Cultural Poster 2017”.

My poster serie is a tribute for Tchaikovsky´s “Swan Lake” and “Nutcracker”. They are representing the visual keywords and composers inner struggle, shame, lust for life and feverish composing. Easy-going artistic style symbolizes the superficial life, but on the other side these are interpretations of contrasts – love and lust, ideals, dreams and disappointments, man, woman and transgender relations, life and death.

Exhibitions of HGDF 2017 are supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, Haapsalu City and the Estonian Graphic Designers Association.

Haapsalu Graphic Design Festival (HGDF) focuses on the developments of poster art and the author’s creative hand-writing in graphic design. Important extra is exhibition “Modern Finland Poster”. I took part in “Individuality” exhibition with sub-theme “Alien”. The poster is a humorous tribute for the motion picture “Alien”, but also gently refers to minorities, as they feel like “alien” in narrow-minded society.

Exhibitions of HGDF 2016 are supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, the Finnish Institute in Estonia, Haapsalu City and the Estonian Graphic Designers Association.

HAAPSALU GRAPHIC DESIGN FESTIVAL
Category: Individuality
Theme: “Mono”
2014

Haapsalu Graphic Design Festival has 10th anniversary in collaboration with Estonian Graphic Artists’ Union and Haapsalu Culture Centre.
Haapsalu Culture Centre and Estonian Cultural Endowment presents two international exhibitions dedicated to poster design. “Fresh Polish Poster” is focused on the developments of the acclaimed Polish poster culture in the world (posters from 2012-2014) and “Polish Poster Classics”, featuring works from the last quarter of the 20th century. Together, the exhibitions comprise over a hundred posters by more than 30 artists. This is probably the biggest survey exhibition of Polish poster in Estonia.
This years theme “Mono” is displayed again in the 1 x 2 meter poster format. Participants are 40 graphic artists from Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Belarus, UK, Equador and Columbia. My “Mono” is an easy-going tribute to Vincent van Gogh, spiced with a pinch of black humor.

Festival is supported by Estonian Cultural Endowment, Polish Embassy in Tallinn, Haapsalu, Estonian Graphic Artists Union.

HAAPSALU GRAPHIC DESIGN FESTIVAL
Category: Individuality
Theme: “Robot”
2013

Traditional Haapsalu Graphic Design Festival (HGDF) was opened in Haapsalu City Gallery and Cultural Centre.
Jury has chosen selection of the latest Estonian cultural posters. 100 posters from 257 works were selected, which give a good overview of the domestic poster artists over the past two years. This years addition is the exhibition “Individuality 2013” with theme “Robot”. Large format posters are presented from 36 best graphic designers – from Estonia, Latvia, Russia, England, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. I am proudly presenting my “Robot” as homo sapiens – surreal combination of antique idealism and modern technology.

HAAPSALU GRAPHIC DESIGN FESTIVAL
Category: Individuality
Theme: “Space”
2012

Haapsalu Graphic Design Festival this year participants are from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and poster artists from England, but the focus is in Russia’s world-class art poster. Three different themes will be exhibited but this years focus is in Russian poster art. Exhibition “Rodchenko 120” is dedicated to Alexander Rodchenko, the famous Russian avantgarde artist. Russia’s best graphic designers and students are presenting works, that are influenced such great artist.
Traditionally, part of the festival is international poster exhibition – “Individuality 2012” that brings together the best of graphic designers from several countries. My apolyptical “Space” is strongly ethnographic, mixed with pixel art and inspired by 2D platform games.

About

AN INTERVIEW WITH MYSELF

NICE TO MEET YOU, WHO ARE YOU? I cannot think of anything clever right now. Kristjan Tramberg.
STILL, PLEASE TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. I have gathered more than 15 years of experience in design. I consider myself a graphic designer. Or a designer, who practices graphic design, because otherwise I would be a drawn designer. I have graduated from the Open Academy of the Estonian Academy of Arts in the speciality of design, which was comprehensive – from interior design and flower arrangement to branding. Today, I practice more or less anything that involves designing, but creating logos and everything related to this seems to be close to my heart. Above all, though, I am a designer, not a marketer. I like looking for connections and references and bring them together in a multifaceted, but minimalist sign system. I would dare to classify myself as a conceptualist. But this is of course fashionable today. For various reasons.
I BELIEVE YOU HAVE GAINED ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND WON AWARDS AS WELL? Yes.
HEADISU (English: Bon Appetit), WHAT A DELIGHTFUL NAME FOR A DESIGN COMPANY! Well, yes… I feel the same, but in actual fact, I always point out Headisu to my cooperation partners as an example of what a company’s name should not be like. Headisu may have already been born when I was at the university. I cannot remember the exact idea, but, in brief, Headisu is a boutique serving food for the soul. Bon appétit. From the perspective of the meaning of a logo that is changing in time, however, everyone can interpret it as they like. One of the potential meanings could be a very simple and naive idea – a little man with horns crossed out in bold is clearly conveying the idea “not bad”.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WORK FOR HEADISU? The whole of Estonia and a piece of the foreign world are connected to Headisu. However, to be exact, only I work for Headisu, i.e., it is fully a “one-man-show”. I would like to stress, though, that the best or even acknowledged work is always born in cooperation. Cooperation with good clients, partners, agencies and other specialists of their fields.
WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS? “Clients” sounds very sterile… I would prefer “cooperation partners”, but, in the name of clarity, let’s stick with “clients”. My “clients” are small companies that are only beginning as well as large companies that have been in the market quite a while. There are some clients, who no very precisely what they want. There are also many clients who only have an idea or a vision, but cannot envision the final outcome. Together, we will form the idea into something more specific and visualise it. In the case of design services, the process of reaching the right outcome is as important as the result. The journey may be twisted and there are no “wrong” solutions, only solutions that need to be tested to reach the destination. On the other hand, staying in contact and communication with the client are important – if it already feels in the first stages that we are not on the same page, it is wise to not take up the journey together.
WHY ARE YOU DOING WHAT YOU’RE DOING? I like it. The more you create, the hungrier you get.
YOU ARE DIFFICULT TO INTREWIEW, YOU DON’T TALK MUCH ABOUT YOURSELF, DO YOU? No. That’s it. Have a look at my Instagram as well.
